Dome Lobby/Restroom Remodeling Project

Updates!

Entry Steps
Entry steps, new tile (almost done)

The remaining sheetrock, trim, and painting work as well as the reinstallation of the toilet stalls is in progress as of Sept 1.

Original post

We’ve been wanting to replace the flooring in the lobby for a while – ever since we had a flood which was the final straw in the demise of the original 30+ year old carpet.

We also have been wanting to make the Dome more accessible for the handicapped.

We have been saving up and with a wedding on the horizon and enough in the bank to pull it off, the project started early in 2020. The COVID-19 lockdown has been the icing on the cake.

To date, we have:

  • removed the coat closets adjacent to the restrooms (rarely if ever used for coats)
  • ex-coat closet walls will eventually be small picture galleries from the early days of Radiance
Closet removed.
  • installed exhaust fans in both restrooms
  • expanded the first stall to conform to the Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines
  • temporarily removed the restroom stall walls and toilets/urinal
  • re-routed plumbing to accommodate the above changes

  • removed the existing restroom tile
  • purchased new tile
  • installed new tile
1000 square ft of tile, ready to install

Old tile vs new tile:

Side projects:

  • Pressure wash the roof and stucco around the entry. Flat roof, stucco, small dome and about 1/5 of the main dome are complete as of this writing.
  • re-coat the black tar flat roof over the lobby with a highly reflective white elastomeric paint/fabric system (the same type of material which coats the Dome roof), which will simultaneously waterproof and keep the lobby cooler. (95% complete)
  • remove the office divider walls previously used to create privacy for the meditation areas and replace with wheeled coat rack frames, on which fabric curtains will be hung. (in progress)

Still to do:

  • complete the sheetrock work
  • install the tile
  • re-install the plumbing
  • re-install the restroom stalls
  • remove remaining wallpaper
  • paint all lobby walls, trim, and doors
  • complete roof repairs
  • lots and lots of cleanup

Stretch goals:

  • install new cabinetry
  • install baby changing station in the handicapped stall
  • fix problems with the fake stucco around the entry
  • replace windows in the ladies restroom
  • super stretch goal: build a permanent ramp for disabled access, entering through a doorway that replaces the window just outside the ladies’ restroom.

Funds are running a bit short, as some of the required tasks (such as re-routing plumbing) were unexpected. Your donations are always appreciated.

You can give to a qualified charity in 2020 and get a deduction even if you are claiming the standard deduction. For single taxpayers the amount is $300 and for married it is $600, so keep your receipts. It’s something at least! This is a provision in the CARES Act that hasn’t received much attention.

Events: Chrysta Bell success, Max Zimmett Sept 10, Prairie Dogs postponed

A quick update on recent and upcoming events:

The Chrysta Bell benefit show on August 6, 2016 was a huge success!  We filled the Dome with around 175 guests who were treated to music, video, and stories from Chrysta Bell and her extremely talented band.  Thanks to the generosity of the artists and of all involved the event gave a big funding boost to Radiance Foundation, completing our A/C fundraising for this year and allowing us to continue our rehab work on the Dome, including replacing the entry flooring, continuing roof work, and correcting some landscaping drainage problems.

Next up is Max Zimmett and Hot Pickin’ Bluegrass on September 10, 2016. Follow that link to purchase tickets in advance, and come join us for a good time.

The Austin Prairie Dogs, who were originally slated to play on October 8th, have had to postpone their show to Saturday, November 5th.

Remember, We are also open to renting the Dome to other groups for one-time or ongoing events such as Meetups.  Contact us with your proposal.

Social Permaculture event raises $$ for Radiance Foundation

I’m happy to report that the Social Permaculture workshop held in the Dome on 3/26/16 (see https://radiancefdn.org/private-event-at-dome-326/) raised $500.00 for our Air Conditioner Replacement fund, bringing the total in the fund to $2305.00.

Do you have a lecture/meeting/other event you’d like to hold in the Dome?  Let John Burgess or Bill Christensen know.  It’s available for rent! *

*we’re currently restricted from offering rental for non-TM related meditation, yoga, or similar activities.

Private event at Dome, 3/26

We will be renting the Dome out on Saturday 3/26 to a group holding an all-day workshop on Social Permaculture.

Please make arrangements to meditate elsewhere on that day, both morning and evening.  Though they should theoretically be finishing up around program time, we expect that there will be some continuing activity after their program officially ends.

(They’re renting by the hour, so it’ll mean additional – much needed – funds for the Air Conditioner replacement)

Residents may also wish to take advantage of the African Food Trailer they’ll have out here for lunch.  I believe that the workshop participants are paying for their food as part of their fee, so please be prepared to pay for your meal if you do take advantage of the availability.

Alash Ensemble Concert

Alash Ensemble

Short notice concert announcement!

Sunday, April 22nd
8 PM
Radiance Dome
$10 per person

Alash are masters of Tuvan throat singing, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. Masters of traditional Tuvan instruments as well as the art of throat singing, Alash are deeply committed to traditional Tuvan music and culture. At the same time, they are fans of western music. Believing that traditional music must constantly evolve, the musicians subtly infuse their songs with western elements, creating their own unique style that is fresh and new, yet true to their Tuvan musical heritage.

This concert WILL happen! We have gotten enough of a response in advance sales to get them to come back to Austin!

Please continue to spread the word. These guys deserve to get more than just their gas money, and your friends need to experience their music!

Bevan Morris and 25th Anniversary of Dome

Dr Bevan Morris, Prime Minister of the Global Country of World Peace will be making a stop in Austin as part of his current tour of US cities.

Coincidentally, his visit comes within a few days of the 25th anniversary of the inauguration of the Dome in October 1985. The Dome was inaugurated by Brahmachari Nadkishore, Dr. Neil Patterson, and Dr. Morris on their first ever visit to Radiance, shortly after its completion.

Join us for an inspiring talk by Dr. Morris in the Dome at 8pm.

Donations to cover costs of bringing Dr Morris to Austin will be greatly appreciated.
